Community Development

Community development in mining fosters local growth by providing education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, empowering communities for sustainable progress. It strengthens relationships and supports long-term regional well-being.

HOPE

Health is essential for community well-being, and PT. Hengjaya Mineralindo (PT. HM) has developed several health support programs to ensure that all community members have access to proper healthcare. One of the eight pillars of the community empowerment program (PPM) that PT. HM must implement is health. As part of this, the company launched the HOPE initiative (Hengjaya Supports Local People’s Health) to improve health in villages surrounding the mine. The program includes health education for youth, nutrition support for school children, clean water provision, and mobile health services.

HOPE aims to improve access to healthcare, prevent and manage diseases through education and routine check-ups, and focus on maternal and child health. It empowers communities to maintain their own health and environment through active participation and continuous health education. By involving various stakeholders, the program seeks to create a healthier, more sustainable community while contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 3: ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.

FruKids

Children's health is greatly influenced by their daily nutritional intake, yet not all have access to nutritious foods like fruits, which are rich in vitamins and fiber. Through the FruKids program, PT. Hengjaya Mineralindo (PT. HM) provides fresh fruit to ensure children receive adequate vitamins and fiber, particularly for early childhood students at TK Kartini in Tangofa Village, Bungku Pesisir District, starting from 2022. This initiative addresses the high stunting rates in Morowali's coastal areas, despite a 27.2% decrease in stunting prevalence in Central Sulawesi. PT. HM promotes healthy eating habits by encouraging children to regularly consume fruit as part of their diet. Nutrition education is also provided, teaching students about the importance of fruits and vegetables and how healthy eating affects their well-being. Monthly interactive educational activities, including nutrition quizzes, fruit-themed coloring contests, and demonstrations on preparing healthy meals, help raise children's awareness of the importance of good nutrition.

YouKnow (Youth Know)

The misuse of Narcotics, Psychotropics, and Addictive Substances (NAPZA) is a serious issue that threatens the physical and mental health of young people. Factors such as peer pressure, lack of information, and ignorance about the dangers contribute to the high rates of NAPZA abuse among teenagers. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct intensive awareness campaigns for middle and high school students about the dangers of NAPZA and ways to avoid it. Since 2021, PT. Hengjaya Mineralindo (PT. HM) has been running the 'Youknow' program in collaboration with the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) of Morowali and local schools, SMP Negeri 1 Bungku Pesisir and SMA Negeri 1 Bungku Pesisir. This program targets teenagers aged 12-18, who are highly susceptible to negative influences. In addition to focusing on NAPZA, PT. HM also educates students on disaster preparedness, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to respond to emergencies. The program includes simulations and drills, such as fire evacuations and basic first aid, including CPR techniques, to ensure students are prepared to act quickly and correctly in emergency situations. The goal is to improve students' understanding of disaster risks and enhance school readiness to respond effectively.

SMART HM

PT Hengjaya Mineralindo (PT. HM) recognizes the significant challenges in improving the quality of education in the communities surrounding its mining operations. These challenges include inadequate infrastructure, a lack of qualified educators, limited resources, low community participation, and socioeconomic barriers. To address these issues, PT. HM emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts involving the government, local communities, and educational institutions to provide equal opportunities for the younger generation to pursue their dreams.

One key initiative by PT. HM is the SMART HM program, which has been in place since 2020. The program focuses on enhancing education through initiatives that improve infrastructure, capacity building, and provide scholarships. SMART HM supports local communities by improving access to quality education from early childhood to higher education, contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which focuses on ensuring quality education for all.

KUAS Dini (Kuatkan Upaya Pendidikan Anak Sedari Dini)

Early childhood education plays a crucial role in a child's development, as it is during this stage that children begin to learn essential knowledge and skills for their future. Recognizing this, PT Hengjaya Mineralindo (PT. HM) has made early childhood education in the communities surrounding its mining operations a priority. One example of this support is the KUAS Dini program, implemented since 2020 at TK Kartini in Desa Tangofa, Kecamatan Bungku Pesisir. The program focuses on improving infrastructure and education quality through school building renovations, the construction of a perimeter fence, paving the schoolyard, providing teacher incentives, operational support, teacher uniforms, and additional nutrition for students. Given the lack of attention from the local government, PT. HM is committed to ensuring the continued optimization of teaching and learning processes by collaborating with the local government and education stakeholders.

PENA Kaili (Pendampingan Literasi & Numerasi Anak Suku Kaili)

Pena Kaili is an initiative by PT Hengjaya Mineralindo (PT. HM) aimed at enhancing literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (counting) skills among children of the Kaili tribe in Central Sulawesi. The Kaili people possess a rich cultural heritage, but often face limited access to formal education. This program seeks to bridge that gap by providing educational support tailored to the local cultural context and needs. Since 2022, the program has been implemented in Desa Kalora, Dusun 3 Batambaya, Kecamatan Kinovaro, Kabupaten Sigi, in collaboration with the local Kaili community, PT Trisula Bersatu as the field implementer, and PT. HM as the facilitator. The initiative includes literacy and numeracy classes based on Kaili folklore, contextual numeracy learning using basic counting concepts, illustrated books, and visual aids such as picture posters and alphabet cards. Beyond improving academic skills, Pena Kaili empowers Kaili children to pursue a brighter future, while fostering respect for their cultural heritage and demonstrating an effective model for enhancing education in remote areas.

PENSIL SMK (Peningkatan Skill Siswa – Siswi SMK)

The internship program is a vital component of vocational high school (SMK) education, bridging the gap between academics and industry. PT Hengjaya Mineralindo (PT. HM) has partnered with several SMKs since 2020 through the "Pensil SMK" program, offering students hands-on industry experience and helping them develop both technical and soft skills. The program aims to enhance students readiness for the workforce by providing practical training and exposure to professional work environments.

As part of this initiative, PT. HM has donated a retired operational vehicle to support student learning, allowing SMK students to gain practical skills. Through a collaboration agreement with the schools and the Central Sulawesi Provincial Education Department, students complete a 90-day internship at PT. HM. Additionally, PT. HM employees regularly serve as guest speakers and competency test examiners, ensuring that SMK graduates possess relevant and high-quality skills, preparing them for a competitive job market.

GIAT (Berbagi Beasiswa Univesitas)

Higher education is a key factor in unlocking better opportunities for the future, but not all high school and vocational school graduates have the financial means to pursue it. This is a common issue in the communities surrounding PT Hengjaya Mineralindo (PT. HM), where many graduates enter the workforce directly due to a lack of skills and higher education. To address this, PT. HM launched the GIAT program in 2023, aimed at supporting talented young individuals from these communities in continuing their studies at the university level until they achieve a bachelor's degree.

The GIAT program provides scholarships to academically accomplished but financially disadvantaged graduates from the surrounding mining areas, enabling them to pursue higher education. This initiative, a collaboration between Nickel Industries (PT. HM's parent company) and Universitas Hasanuddin Makassar, offers full scholarships in fields such as Mining Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Metallurgy, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Forestry, and others. The program covers tuition fees, living expenses, and accommodation costs for students from Kecamatan Bungku Pesisir and Kecamatan Bahodopi, ensuring they can focus on their studies without financial concerns.
