Nickel laterite is the result of the lateritization process of the source rock with ultramafic composition. Nickel laterite is a soil residue rich in oxides of iron with nickel enrichment which is formed in alkaline and ultramafic rocks as a result of chemical weathering and further enrichment in tropical climate conditions. The presence of the original rock in the formation of nickel laterite is the main factor. These rocks are rocks that contain a lot of olivine minerals which are primary nickel carrier minerals (0.3 – 0.5%), The highest concentration of olivine is found in ultramafic rocks. In ultramafic rocks that have soluble components (especially olivine) will provide a good depositional environment for nickel. Nickel laterite is a mineral that has a high economic value because at present and in the future the demand for nickel is increasing. One of the companies engaged in the laterite nickel mining business in Morowali is PT. Hengjaya Mineralindo.
